Northstar Invitational Continues to Build Valuable Curriculum for Attending Athletes
The Northstar Invitational, hosted by Summit Lacrosse Ventures (SLV), was established in 2012 as a premier developmental opportunity, one of the first of its kind for young, high-level, female student athletes. The eighth annual Northstar Invitational will be held July 29-August 1, 2019 at the historic Northwood School in Lake Placid, New York.
Northstar has evolved each year since its 2012 inception, but its mission has withstood: calculated curriculum, concentrated competition, valuable education, and preparation for competition at the highest achievable level. Northstar has never been “just another camp” – its holistic approach focuses on sports performance, leadership, inspiration, mental fitness, recruiting process perspective, and relationship-building; its beautiful Adirondack setting, and the historic Lake Placid sports atmosphere are at its core, and SLV aims for a truly unique experience. Perhaps more importantly, its intention is for athletes to leave Northstar with greater confidence, sparked passion, enhanced leadership responsibility, and added tools.
On-field sessions are competitive and constructive in format, to include full-field and small-field play, SPEED Lacrosse, and the Northstar Performance Index (NPI). In 2019, there will be an increased emphasis on the small-sided game, in alignment with the recent Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL), now World Lacrosse, format announcement, in an effort to return lacrosse to the Olympic Games. Additionally, Northstar athletes will receive education surrounding collegiate rules, with the opportunity to implement into games. A Northstar Champion is named, but of greater emphasis is overall team performance, development, and camaraderie.
Off-field sessions are equally as important to the experience. Northstar Lacrosse is pleased to announce a new partnership with Brave Enterprises, known for their unique, high-energy, and deliberate leadership training. Brave was founded by lacrosse legend, Crista Samaras, whose many years of experience in coaching young female athletes evolved into meaningful and effective curriculum. Brave programming will be strategically implemented throughout the Invitational, bringing its focused approach and tools to athletes right on the field, where confidence and bravery are critical. Attending parents will also engage with Brave, to support and bolster confidence in their daughters. “We are very excited to partner with Brave”, said Northstar Co-Founder, Ashley Gersuk Murphy. “Brave’s mission clearly aligns with ours: to empower young women to capitalize on their strengths, increase their confidence, and ultimately be better equipped to achieve their goals, on and off the field.” “Bravery is a muscle and learning how to flex it can take time”, said Samaras. “Northstar is committed to helping girls get on the chase of big goals and supporting them with tools and resources to remain in pursuit. This kind of playground to practice is critical for teens, especially at this age when confidence, and bravery, decreases in girls.”
Additionally, widely respected mental fitness specialist, Dr. Mara Smith, brings tremendous perspective to athletes during her presentation. Having worked with countless Olympic athletes and Team USA programs, Smith knows what it takes to apply mental toughness at the highest level of competitive sports, and helps athletes integrate this element into their training. In addition to a built-in Mental Toughness session, athletes can schedule an individual session with Dr. Smith.
We continue to enhance our collaboration with Cross Street Sports (formerly, Sports Recruits) to offer metric-based exposure to college coaches, video coverage services, and valuable educational information about the college recruiting process, to both athletes and their parents. Northstar Invitational game film will be distributed to all DI-III coaches in 2019. SportsRecruits has been on the Northstar team from the get-go to offer professional guidance and services to help attendees navigate the recruiting process. SportsRecruits continues to be on the technological forefront of helping student athletes find the right college fit, at the highest possible level. Stay tuned for the 2019 Northstar Recruiting Preparation Guide, which will be sent to you in the coming days.
SLV is pleased to announce a multi-year partnership with NIKE as the Presenting Sponsor and Official Apparel Supplier of Northstar Lacrosse. NIKE will supply each attending Northstar Invitational athlete with a custom gear kit, along with championship and staff apparel for all Northstar events, to include the Capital City Classic, Capital City Winter Classic, Midwest Showcase, and Northstar division at the Lake Placid Summit Classic. “We are proud to represent NIKE as an organization”, said SLV Brand Manager Kevin Leveille. “In addition to its quality product as the world’s largest apparel and footwear brand, NIKE is committed to our Northstar mission, which is to support and develop the next generation of female student athlete leaders.” “The Nike Lacrosse partnership with Northstar Lacrosse begins with Northstar’s guiding principles”, continued Mike Fisher, Nike’s Category Sales Director. “They start with exceptional leaders, coaches and staff who are passionate about the sport and who are committed to the education, growth and development of players. I’m excited for the new partnership with Northstar Lacrosse and look forward to what the future holds.” In further support of Northstar’s mission, NIKE intends to send one of their professional athletes to the Northstar Invitational to share their experiences with attending athletes.
Graph-Tex, Northstar’s exclusive screen printer, is responsible for making the Nike product come to life as Northstar Nike apparel. A longtime partner of both Lake Placid Summit and Nike, Graph-tex is known nationwide for their best-in-class, high-quality work.
“I wish I was a Northstar athlete”, said Leveille, former Captain of Team USA. “We are fortunate to be partnered with first-class, athlete-driven brands and organizations”. “We are proud to host such high-quality student athletes from around the US and beyond”, continued Murphy, a 2005 National Champion. “Our mission at Northstar is to support the development of these future leaders and offer them a world-class experience. With the support of our partners and curriculum-focused approach, we’re capable of making that happen.”
The 2019 Northstar Invitational selection process is nearly complete, with 500+ recommendations submitted from well-respected high school and club coaches across the United States and Canada. Invited student athletes will represent the highest caliber of the 2021, 2022, and 2023 graduating high school classes. Past Northstar athletes have left large shoes to fill, with hundreds of Northstar Athletes verbally committed to, or currently playing on Division I women’s lacrosse programs.
