Summit Lacrosse Ventures’ 8th Annual Northstar Invitational is Ready to Roll

The Northstar Invitational, hosted by Summit Lacrosse Ventures (SLV), was established in 2012 as a premier developmental and exposure opportunity, one of the first of its kind for young, high-level, female student athletes. The eighth annual 2019 Northstar Invitational will be held in just under two weeks, July 29-August 1, at the historic Northwood School in Lake Placid, New York.

Northstar was founded by Ashley (Gersuk) Murphy, a National Champion, 4-year team Captain, and All-American from Northwestern University, and George Leveille, who has impacted lacrosse at every level for 30+ years. Director, Kevin Leveille, is one of the most prolific scorers in lacrosse history, and the former Captain of Team USA. Northstar’s leaders have experienced the game at every level and aim to give back to the next generation of student athletes. In addition to Northstar’s Directors, high quality coaches and counselors who have competed at the collegiate level will lead each team, passing along their knowledge and experience to attending athletes who hope to sit in their shoes someday. Several coaches were Northstar athletes themselves.

Athletes from the classes of 2021, 2022 and 2023 will descend on the Olympic Village of Lake Placid from nearly 20 states across the United States, along with British Columbia and New Zealand. Athletes will be challenged, on and off the field, to raise their own bar ---- through skill and teamwork in full and small-sided games, and SPEED Lacrosse, and with power, speed, and agility in the Northstar Performance Index (NPI). This year, there will be an increased emphasis on the small-sided game, in alignment with the recent World Lacrosse trial rules announcement, which aims to return lacrosse to the Olympic Games. Additionally, Northstar athletes will receive education surrounding collegiate rules, while implementing them into games.

A mental fitness presentation and optional one-on-one sessions will be hosted by Dr. Mara Smith, who works with countless Olympic athletes and Team USA programs. Emily Sweeney of Team USA’s Luge team will accompany Dr. Smith to share her experiences as an elite athlete.

Brave Enterprises, known for unique, high-energy, and deliberate leadership training, founded by lacrosse legend, Crista Samaras, will be strategically implemented throughout the week, bringing its focused approach and tools to athletes right on the field, where confidence and bravery are critical. Attending parents will also engage with Brave, to support and bolster confidence in their daughters.

NIKE, Northstar’s Presenting Sponsor, will supply athletes with a custom gear kit, and has arranged for one of lacrosse’s most recognizable names, Sam Apuzzo, to visit Northstar. Apuzzo, a Tewaaraton Trophy winner, #1 overall WPLL draft pick this spring, and Boston College’s all-time leading point scorer will speak to athletes on the heels of her tremendous collegiate career.

A majority of Northstar athletes have gone on to play Division I college lacrosse; suffice it to say that 2019 Northstar attendees share the same goal. Attending athletes will receive recruiting process guidance from partner SportsRecruits aka Cross Street Sports, whose mission is to help student athletes find the right college fit. Film packages are available, and parents are welcomed to the annual parent-specific recruiting process meeting, which is intended to give educated, objective, and nuanced perspective. SportsRecruits will conduct a pre-event webinar exclusively for Northstar Athletes. Following the Northstar journey, game film will be distributed to all DI-III coaches.
