Every July since 2012, we have found ourselves at the historic Northwood School, nestled in the Adirondack Mountains, surrounded by the aura of elite athletes and Olympic vibes, alongside 100+ confident, passionate, talented, and strong young women, elite athletes in their own right. Each summer we leave with the feeling that THIS is what it’s all about.
It’s about collecting the right type of student athletes – serious about lacrosse, but just as serious about leadership, teamwork, academics, FUN, and carving a path for success on the field, and where it really counts, in life. Add a carefully-planned program of full-field and small-sided games, the Northstar Performance Index, an Olympic speaker alongside her Mental Fitness guru, top-of-the-line Nike gear, a 2-time Tewaaraton finalist to break down film, current collegiate student athletes to share their experiences, and then sprinkle highly energetic BRAVE curriculum throughout…and see what happens.
The increase in confidence and talent is tangible and we are continually impressed with how dynamic, receptive, competitive, respectful, and gritty these athletes are. If we were college coaches, these would be the type of kids who we would welcome to our programs. Some will undoubtedly be stars at the highest level, but we are confident that all will be strong leaders, good teammates, and meaningful contributors. We are proud to collect all we have experienced throughout our athletic and professional careers and offer it to the next generation.
In 2019, NSI hosted student athletes in the 2021, 2022, and 2023 classes from 18 US States, Canada, and New Zealand. Teams competed in mixed graduation year teams, named after the leaders of the USWNT Gold Medal Winning Soccer Team. Team Morgan defeated team Rapinoe to take home the Northstar Championship. Athletes also split into graduation years to showcase the World Lacrosse 6v6 Trial format, and 3v3 SPEED lacrosse. Eight team MVPs were named, along with Summit Society Leadership Awards, BRAVE awards, and leaders in each of the Northstar Performance Index tests. CLICK HERE for all award winners.
We are confident that Northstar’s 2019 athletes elevated their game, added to their toolbox, became Braver, made friends from around the country (world!), and hopefully, each feels empowered to achieve their potential, having left Lake Placid loving lacrosse even more than they did upon arrival.
We are already brainstorming about next near - July 27-30, 2020 will mark the 9th edition of the Northstar Invitational. If you are reading this and know an athlete who fits the Northstar bill (maybe it's you!), click here to check out the details and begin the process.
