The 2016 BRINE Northstar Invitational, one of the nation’s premier recruiting and development experiences, will return for its fifth consecutive year to the Northwood School in historic Lake Placid. The Northstar Invitational combines concentrated talent, carefully engineered on-field sessions, college recruiting exposure, and high quality lacrosse competition. Attendees are offered nearly as much experience off the field, with extensive focus on sports performance, leadership, inspiration, mental fitness, recruiting perspective, and a holistic approach to supporting student athletes in the endeavor to be their best.
“We seek and develop cutting edge resources to offer Northstar athletes as valuable and unique an experience as possible”, explained Northstar Co-Founder Ashley Gersuk Murphy. “Our athletes have been selected to Northstar because they are leaders, and we embrace the opportunity to contribute to their development and success.”
On the field, the 2016 Northstar competition is as strong as ever, and the reference point is strong; nearly 200 Past Northstar Athletes have committed to Division I programs, and many of them are making an impact in the NCAA Tournament as we speak. In 2016, we have gathered 165 of the nation’s top student athletes, spanning graduation years 2018, 2019, and 2020. Attending 2016 Northstar Invitational student athletes are listed here; hailing from 23 US States, and British Columbia.
“Each year, we are impressed with the talent and competitiveness of our athletes," Murphy continued. "Each has dreams of competing at the next level; it is special to see them come together - be it from California, Canada, Illinois, Florida, or New York - and be surrounded by other individuals of their caliber, to challenge each other, and learn from each other. We are confident that our 2016 athletes will follow in the footsteps of those before them.”
The majority of play will include full-field games, in mixed graduation year teams. Teams stay consistent throughout Northstar, with a focus on teamwork, chemistry development, and maximizing team-oriented success.
In 2016, the Northstar Performance Index (NPI), which has been developed and refined each year by Northstar’s Sports Performance Director, Ron Greenfield, will add a second 300-yard shuttle to demonstrate endurance and speed, a test utilized by most collegiate programs to determine an athlete’s conditioning. The NPI consists of many of the same Testing Mechanisms used at the collegiate level, and was created to give Coaches the opportunity to gauge athletes’ speed and agility, change of direction, body control, level of endurance, and mental focus. One feature, unique to Northstar is the “Northstar 40”, which is a 40-yard dash, but with a stick and ball.
Northstar, and its student athletes, benefit from a great relationship with Dr. Mara Smith, who works with a broad spectrum of athletes to build the mental skills to reach their maximum potential. As individuals who have experienced lacrosse (and other sports) at every level, the Northstar Directors strongly believe that mental skills are as important as physical skills. Mara will join Northstar again this year, to include guests from the Olympic Training Center. Lake Placid’s storied sports history offers a unique opportunity to experience some of the world’s best athletes. Past guests have included: Ashley Caldwell (Team USA, Freestyle Ski), Jayson Terdiman (Team USA, Luge), Jamie Greubel (Team USA, Bobsled), Andrew Weibrecht (Team USA, Alpine Ski), and Chris Mazdzer (Team USA, Luge).
Just this week, Northstar announced a partnership with Victory Academy, whose mission is focused on Empowering our Emerging Generation to Maximize their Potential, and to Make those around them Better. Victory’s Executive Director is Kristen Kjellman Marshall, 2-Time World Cup Lacrosse Champion, 2-Time Tewaaraton Trophy Winner, and 3-Time National Champion. Kristen will be at Northstar to conduct a Victory Academy program which will focus on Setting the Foundation for Leadership and Motivating each Student-Athlete to Unleash their Potential.
Northstar’s recruiting partner, and US Lacrosse's Official Service Provider for recruiting, LacrosseRecruits, will again be on site to offer educational and film services, and to support both athletes, and college coaches.
“As the recruiting process continues to evolve, Northstar is focused on the developmental opportunity presented by concentrated talent and streamlined information from individuals who have been there, and who know the process", said Murphy. “We aim for Northstar athletes to leave Lake Placid as more informed, motivated, and confident leaders, with a sense of where they fall in the national landscape, and how best to allocate their resources as they navigate the waters, and aim to achieve their goals.”
