Why Northstar?

The NSI is geared toward and will benefit the serious student athlete, but is open to any/all entrants and limited only by capacity, position, and graduation year

Is recruiting a hot topic in your lacrosse circles? It is in ours, and at its core, we love the subject ---- the process by which future collegiate student athletes 'match' with schools and programs that best fit their academic, athletic, and personal profiles, and the gateway to an incredibly special and once-in-a-lifetime experience as a college student athlete ---- but IMHO, the frame of reference can be skewed at times. The feelings of opportunity and excitement are sometimes replaced with pressure and uncertainty. We strongly believe that it's most important to focus on becoming the best student athlete possible, choosing opportunities to develop on and off the field. We believe priority #1 should be to become as recruitable as possible, so that when the time comes, you are in a position to maximize your opportunity. Focusing on your development (and this includes academic success first and foremost), along with due diligence, choosing strategic recruiting opportunities, and fostering your relationships within the sport, will help you take control of your own process, and put you in a position to succeed.  Northstar is designed to develop the student athlete - to foster talent, initiative, competition, confidence, fun, camaraderie, knowledge, respect, leadership, and as a result, to make each athlete more recruitable, and better equipped to achieve their goals for 'next level' lacrosse.

Northstar Sessions:

  • (1) Northstar Performance Index (NPI): The NPI tests speed, agility, endurance, and general athletic capacity and is conducted by Northstar Sports Performance Director, Ron Greenfield, who has trained many successful collegiate athletes.
  • (1-2) Small-Sided Game Sessions: Combines even strength, man up/down situations to focus on athletes’ stick work, decision-making, ability to play both offense and defense, and spatial awareness. It's also...FUN. Think backyard, no pressure, risk-taking, hot-dogging, out-of-breath, playground lax!
  • (8) Full-Field Games: Games will be refereed, and will culminate in a Northstar Championship. Certain NCAA rules will be taught and implemented.
  • (Multiple) Off-Field Development Sessions: Leadership, Bravery, Mental Fitness, Sports Performance, Elite Athlete Speaker(s), Next Level Preparation.

Northstar Teams:

  • For full-field games, athletes are broken into mixed graduation year teams of 15-17 (to include a goalie).
  • For small-sided games, athletes are broken into teams by graduation year, giving players the opportunity to compete only with players in their same class.
  • We make every effort to create an appropriate split of attackers, middies, and defenders.
  • Each team has two dedicated coaches, who are high-level collegiate player(s), and/or experienced HS/club coaches. Northstar staff members are carefully hand-picked.
  • Northstar highly encourages and creates an environment to value team play and high-level fun, rather than individual showcase.

We believe that individuals are products of their environment, their experiences, their teams, and their families - immediate and extended. From that simple concept, and what it means to us, the Northstar Invitational was established in 2012.  Northstar fosters a unique, positive, and productive development experience for talented young women. We welcome the next generation of student athlete leaders into the Northstar Lacrosse family, and into a network of confident, successful, and passionate individuals who aim to play a meaningful role in helping them achieve their dreams, on and off the lacrosse field.

The Northstar Directors and Co-Founders have been on NCAA Championship teams, World Championship teams, traveling club teams, high school teams, middle school teams and youth teams. We attended camps, clinics, and tournaments over many years, and played multiple sports throughout our careers. We have also been a parent at each of these levels. We have been deeply involved in sports for as long as we each can remember. Our point? We have taken notes, gathered information, developed philosophies, and built lifelong relationships along the way. We aim to take all that we have gathered --- the good, the bad, the lessons, the “how to’s”, the “do’s”, and the “don'ts” --- and offer our insight and experience to the next generation of student athletes. NSI is an opportunity for us to give back, and honestly, it's one of our absolute favorite weeks of the year.

At our core is a strong commitment to do our best for Northstar athletes and their families, and to provide them with as much value as possible. We are confident that NSI families will benefit from their experience, and we look forward to welcoming the next wave of athletes into our Northstar family.
